Emergency Procedures for the
smart Pet ID system (residents)

About: these Emergency Procedures reflect best practices for ensuring the safety and well-being of pets during emergencies. They represent our recommendations, are purely suggestive, and are not a requirement for implementing the Pet Identification System at any location.

General guidelines

1 Ensure safety first

  • Always prioritize your safety and the safety of your pet during any emergency.
  • Stay calm and follow the instructions provided by your community manager and emergency services.

2 Communication

  • Use the smart Pet ID system to stay informed about emergency alerts and instructions.
  • Notify your community manager of any immediate concerns or needs using the smart Pet ID system.

Common emergencies

1 Fire emergency

  1. Steps to follow:
    Evacuate immediately: when the fire alarm sounds, leave your unit immediately. Use the smart Pet ID system to check for any specific instructions from your community manager.
  2. Take your pet: if it is safe to do so, take your pet with you. If it is not, find safety and ask someone to help. Use a leash or carrier to keep your pet under control.
  3. Use designated exits: follow designated evacuation routes and avoid elevators.
  4. Gather at assembly points: go to the pre-designated assembly point and inform your community manager of your and your pet’s safety.
  5. Stay updated: use the smart Pet ID system to receive updates on the situation and instructions on when it is safe to return.

2 Natural disasters (e.g. earthquake, flood, hurricane)

Steps to follow:

  1. Prepare in advance: use the smart Pet ID system to receive information on how to prepare for natural disasters, including emergency kits for you and your pet.
  2. Follow alerts: monitor alerts and instructions through the smart Pet ID system.
  3. Take shelter: follow the emergency protocols specific to the disaster (e.g., take cover during an earthquake, move to higher ground during a flood).
  4. Secure your pet: keep your pet close and secure, using a leash or carrier.
  5. Communicate needs: if you need assistance, use the smart Pet ID system to communicate with your community manager

3 Medical emergencies involving animals

Steps to follow:

  1. Assess the situation: determine the severity of your pet’s condition.
  2. Contact a veterinarian: use the smart Pet ID system to find and contact a nearby veterinarian immediately.
  3. Seek help: if you need transportation to the veterinary clinic, notify your community manager through the smart Pet ID system.
  4. Document the Incident: use the smart Pet ID system to document the incident and any actions taken.

4 Aggressive or loose animals

Steps to follow:

  1. Ensure safety: keep yourself, your pet, and others safe from aggressive or loose animals.
  2. Notify your community manager: use the smart Pet ID system to report the incident immediately.
  3. Avoid confrontation: do not attempt to capture or confront aggressive or loose animals unless it is safe to do so.
    Follow instructions: follow any additional instructions provided by your community manager or animal control.

5 Animal abuse

Steps to follow:

  1. Observe and document: if you suspect a pet is being mistreated, observe the situation and document any signs of abuse or neglect.
  2. Notify authorities: contact local animal control or the police to report the mistreatment. Provide them with your observations and any evidence you have collected.
  3. Use the smart Pet ID system: report the incident to your community manager through the smart Pet ID system, including any relevant details.
    Follow up: ensure that authorities and your community manager are following up on the situation to ensure the pet’s safety.

6 Lost animal

Steps to follow:

  1. Observe and document: if you encounter a lost pet, observe the situation and document any identifying details, such as the pet’s appearance, location, and behavior. Take photos if possible.
  2. Notify authorities: contact local animal control or a nearby shelter to report the lost pet. Provide them with all the information you have gathered.
  3. Use the smart Pet ID system: report the lost pet to your community manager through the smart Pet ID system. Include relevant details such as the pet’s last known location and any identifying features to help reunite that pet’s family.
    Follow up: ensure that authorities and your community manager are following up on the situation to secure the pet’s safety and facilitate its return to the family.

Post-Emergency Procedures

1 Conduct a safety check:

  • After the emergency, check your pet for any injuries or signs of stress.

2 Seek veterinary care:

  • If your pet needs medical attention, use the smart Pet ID system and contact your trusted veterinarian

3 Communicate with your community manager:

  • Use the smart Pet ID system to report your and your pet’s status and any damages or issues.

4. Stay informed:

  • Continue to use the smart Pet ID system to receive updates and information on any necessary follow-up actions.

5 Provide feedback:

Share your experiences and suggestions for improvement with your community manager through the smart Pet ID system to help enhance future emergency responses.
